I finally got to test out running in my new area this past weekend!
I suppose I could have been ambitious and tried to go for a run before work during the week, but since I’m not super familiar with the area, it seemed smarter to wait for the weekend when I would have unlimited time to really check it out (without having to worry about getting lost.) That didn’t stop me from signing up for my new gym membership and attending a couple of classes (more like small training groups than real classes though – more on that later.)
Saturday morning, I slept in to the ripe old time of 7:30 (I’m bad at sleeping late), and then had a leisurely cup of coffee and breakfast before heading out to check out a nearby park I had noticed. Given the number of runners I saw there, I think it’s safe to say that it’s a bit of a running hot spot! I had a lot of fun exploring the nice, paved trails and appreciated having a little distance from the roads. I stopped to take a couple pictures since it was just too scenic not to.
I ended up running just over 6 miles. It was a GORGEOUS day to run – perfectly cool and breezy. It was also my first long-sleeve run of the season! I’m beginning to remember just how much I love the Fall for running. My average pace came to 9:08/mile (with a few sub 9 miles sprinkled in), a little slower than I’ve been running lately, but given that I was pretty sore, I’ll take it!
The reason I was sore? Well, I may have gotten a little excited about my new gym membership and dove headfirst into the cross-training this week. The day after I joined, I did a 30-minute abs class, that I didn’t think was too bad at first. Well, here I am 3 days later and I still can’t cough or laugh without feeling my abs ache! Never mind trying to sit up from bed in the mornings. The day after I did that class, I did a 30-minute full-body circuit workout which was another tough one. I am definitely psyched to fit more cross-training into my workouts now that I have such easy access to exercise machines and equipment!
Sunday was pretty much a repeat of Saturday. I woke up pretty early and was out the door for my run before 9 am. I’m glad I did get out early because there were people were setting up for a charity walk in the park! It must have had a 10 AM start because I was able to get my whole run in and get out of there before too many people started showing up for it. It was another gorgeous day for walking and running. Why can’t Fall last longer?? Why does it have to turn into winter (and snow drifts that are quite literally taller than I am?!)?
After my mom finished her 22-miler on Sunday, she drove up to visit me and help me out with some decorating/house chores for the new apartment. Things are finally starting to feel like a home here!
Hope your week is off to a great start! Are you also enjoying the beginning of Fall?
